The Right H2S Solution Can Impact Profitability
Throughout the country, large volumes of natural gas are produced on an annual basis for the purpose of generating heat and producing electricity. As it is extracted from the ground, much of this gas is contaminated with varying quantities of acid gases. The two most common contaminants are CO2 and H2S. In particular, H2S is highly toxic. Therefore, the need for H2S removal becomes critical before natural gas can be sent to the pipeline. According to pipeline specifications in the United States, H2S levels must be reduced to 4 ppm in pipeline gas. In order to accomplish this goal, a number of amine plants are currently in use. Depending upon the situation, a custom amine plant solution may be created to treat specific contaminants.
For instance, in some instances sour gas may be contacted with an amine water solution, thus allowing acid gases to be absorbed. The solution can then be heated before being passed through a low-pressure still column, allowing the amine solution to be regenerated in order to drive off the acid gases. Finally, the solution is recirculated through to an absorber. Some of the more common amine plants in use today include diethanolamine, monoethanolamine, and diglycolamine. Each of these plants possesses a distinctive set of properties that allows it to be highly desirable under specific conditions. The process of designing an amine plant solution requires careful planning and consideration. Choosing the right designer to handle H2S removal is a decision that can prove to be vital to the profitability of a natural gas producer.
